Weekly Track Roundup 12/5/22: Extreme Dadcore

My dad will probably read this, so I’m going to be as nice as possible:
dads are scary.
or cool. or nice. or some other trait. I don’t really know; I only have the one dad. Anyway, this week we’re talking about songs that our dads would “get turnt to”

Flo Rida - “Club Can’t Handle Me” (feat. David Guetta)

Since this song came out my dad has been convinced that it is THE most relevant party song. The fact that it came out 12 years ago does not seem to deter him for playing it at every function he has the unholy privilege of being DJ.

-Terry Brannigan

Wild Cherry - “Play That Funky Music”

This is a certified white dad classic, it would definitely get my dad turnt and he doesn’t even really listen to music ever. I don’t really have much else to say.

-Lily Lazar

Duke Deuce - “Crunk Ain’t Dead”

If timed right, this roundup should come out around my dad’s birthday. My dad absolutely loves working out. He’s converted most of our basement into a gym, utilized his YMCA membership, and even invested in a Peloton. Because of the high intensity workouts, he likes high intensity music, which means my dad works out to the most explicit, bass boosted southern Hip-Hop you could imagine a bald white man to listen to. I choose this song because memphis rap has been permanently infused with the image of my dad working out in my brain, and it’s something that I love.

-Emmett Favreau

Alan Parsons Project - “I Wouldn’t Want to Be Like You”

When I think of ‘dad music’, I think of the playlists my dad would burn onto CD’s for long car trips. For my dad, his music taste is firmly placed in the 70’s with disco, funk, folk, but especially rock. This song is the perfect representation of my dad’s taste at its best: a little rocky, a little experimental, and alluding to some classic literature.

-Alexandra Taylor

Pharrell Williams - “Happy”

I know little to nothing about what my dad actually listens to, other than that he used to play the Hamilton soundtrack a lot and that he starts blasting Christmas radio stations as soon as Thanksgiving's over (we're Jewish). One day when I was checking my Last.fm last year, I noticed that, for some reason, “Happy” by Pharrell Williams was my top listened to track. I've never confirmed this, but my theory of what happened is that when I left for school, I left my Spotify account logged into a Google Home my dad had, and very often, he would be working at home and be like, "Hey Spotify, play something happy", and it would always just play "Happy".

-Nathan Hausspiegel

New Edition - “Mr. Telephone Man”

Fun fact: my dad performed this song on national television! So obviously, it is very near and dear to him, and he plays the video all the time for me, so I've learned to love the song as well.

-Nolan Lewis

Dimitri From Paris - “Une Very Stylish Fille”

Any time my dad had control of the aux when I was a kid, this song was invariably played. It feels exactly like a silly little movie from the fifties, full of transatlantic accents. Everyone in my family has probably quoted the samples used in it at least a dozen times, just because it is so deeply ingrained in our brains. And it's not on Spotify at the moment, so you can feel like you're listening to something really underground! (I think I still have the mp3 file my dad downloaded from Frostwire back in the day) The last 6 seconds really tie it together.

-Beatrix Briggs

Maze & Frankie Beverly - “Before I Let Go”

This song screams “Y’all don’t know nothing about this”. Scientific studies need to be done on its power to teleport every dad to the dance floor at any event. It’s the perfect tempo to groove to without breaking a sweat. They’re definitely onto something with this one.

-Kennady Cox

Foo Fighters - “Monkey Wrench”

we all live in the San Fernando Valley this was bound to happen

-Max Levin

Black Country, New Road - “Sunglasses”

I am not completely sure why but one time I played this for my dad and he was like damn that's cool so maybe he's still got it after all ("it" being "swagger")

-Cassandra Weigle
