Weekend Preview // 2/19 - 2/21
Jerry Paper
(+DJ puff_mommy & DJ Luuuuuuke)
ArtMuho // Thursday 10 PM
Jerry Paper is the kind of guy to read a book about Al-Qaeda on Valentine’s Day, but on his music he uses floating synths and lyrics to wonder about different dimensions, representation, and the importance of love. All his human conduit Lucas Nathan can tell us about him is that he’s trapped on a cruise ship, singing for patrons and lost in the life he lives. Come check him out when he washes ashore at ArtMuho. Kiss a chameleon. Passionately.
DJ puff_mommy recently “thought 2 [herself] 'This is art' as [she] took pictures of [her] vagina with Photo Booth.” Her therapist really wants her to think she’s cool, and Mykki Blanco once called her one of the best-dressed people at Wesleyan. All she wants is to make Youtube beauty videos and write celebrity obituaries, and I guess make cool music and play it 4 u.
“The” DJ Luuuuuuke is disgusted by pleasure, ready to pounce when he pleases, and doesn’t tweet for the faves. In his first performance of the weekend (catch him again Friday with his band Lunch Cult), he’ll clip some familiar sounds and mix them up so your ears smile at every turn. Keep an eye out for his neon spandex.
Cymbals Eat Guitars (+all-caps LADD & Schwab)
Eclectic // Friday 10:00 PM
Cymbals Eat Guitars stick guitars and keys in a blender and next level rock instrumentation pours out. Consistency A+. Then they sprinkle some drums n' bass in there so it sounds kinda like Modest Mouse, kinda like Titus Andronicus, maybe Bruce Springsteen(?) but mostly like your very own indie-rok nüsmoothie. Come slurp it up.
Described as “Middletown rock”, all-caps LADD is a fun group of dudes who like to get rowdy and play the kind of soul-smoothing windy-rock that'll make you catch yourself showing the singer, shower the in-singing, singing in the shower. If you’re nice, they might even play their new single “Be Mine”, released Valentine’s Day. So romantic.
Commanded by Schwab herself, three-piece Schwab (named after Schwab) will surely get you pumped for the rest of the night by dishing out some sick indie-rock jams. R.I.Paris Alex Lee. Hi Piers?
VAX (+Lunch Cult, Salt People & Trigger)
ArtMuho // Friday 10 PM
If anyone hears you say "vacks" at this VAX show, everyone will know. They'll know you're not in the loop. Here's the loop. It's pronounced "fasjsh." Make sure to accentuate the "j." Their heady, globular jazz will smoosh into your ears. Smooooosh.
Living legends. Garbage punksters. Avant Blow-tards. White turtlenecked spaceboys. Sublime parody-crafters. In the perfect unison of their cult-consensus, Lunch Cult nod " " to all of the above and pose the question "is punk dead or just post?" With a theatrical set that's both airtight and flapping loudly at the seams, Lunch cult will play you their songs.
Salt People make chant-like entrancing “scum jazz” that’ll be sure to please. They'll sing you the syrupy and sweet melodies of their people. The salt people. This frenzied and funk filled group of 7 is a kooky and energetic melody mammal.
John Zorn's music sits under the Chrimbus tree, glistening in cherry red wrapping paper and tied with fluorescent green bows. The bows are actually snakes. The card only says one thing, "trigger warning." Open the box. It's Trigger. John Zorn too, but mostly Trigger. It's the best thrashing, muscular and spontaneous noise-rock Zorn renditions you've ever heard.
Swim Team (+Saarim & DIN/VOID)
Eclectic // Saturday 9 PM
The cymbals ate all the guitars, luckily we have Swim Team. A hazy mix of deep club beats and vapor-trap spewed like so many plumes of smoke. This electronic collaborative is gonna bump.
Spinning donuts in his 96’ Camry and inciting riots with ceaseless sets from atop his audio-throne, SAARIM slays on the ‘tables. Who else do you think is responsible for Eclectic popping off 24/7?
Freshman talent DIN/VOID brings his heady and surreal ambient-beat-collage to college, Wesleyan college.
